Books

OEUVRE, French, noun.

The works of a painter, composer or author regarded collectively:

“This is the complete oeuvre of Nancy Rue’s published books.“

No one writes a novel alone – contrary to legends of starving scriveners wasting away in attics while they pen their stories. Part of the fun of creating a work of fiction for me is to involve future readers in things like naming characters, locating obscure information and seeking their expertise. Simply go to my Facebook Page and participate in the discussion – or just come along for the ride, bumpy as it may be at times!

Many titles shown here are in print and available on-line through most book venues. Others are now out of print but can be purchased used.

Some are what writers call Works-In-Progress or W.I.P. You are invited to participate in the development of those projects — if that’s your jam.

A Mob of Scribbling Women

Scribbling Woman Press

In Book Two of the Footnotes Collection, Sarianna Deardon’s husband Taylor is critically injured, and the Plan they had for their life is destroyed, Sari is left at a rock bottom even her usual escapes into all things Victorian can’t rescue her from. Her hopes of becoming a mother have been shattered. Her marriage has splintered on every level. She’s being followed, burglarized, scrutinized by her mother-in-law, and interrogated by the Concord police. She feels herself transforming from her put-together, romantically Victorian curated self into a shuddering mass of grief and doubt. Until she discovers an angry quote from Nathaniel Hawthorne…

“America is being inundated by a damned mob of scribbling women.”

In the words of fellow Footnote Freddie Cavella, “Oh, hell, yeah it is. And we are so in!” With the growing—and unconventional—support of her trio of Concord, Massachusetts, writers, Sari is hauled to her feet. With the unlikely friendship of a non-stereotypical retired priest, she is moved to look at what is carrying her. And with the sudden turning of her stalled Victorian Romance novel onto its head, she is launched into the discovery of truth about her marriage. About her true longings. About what might exist beyond herself.

More than a Footnote

Scribbling Woman Press

Meredith Whitt was the best-selling author of a book that launched a movement and her career. Until her 16-year-old daughter was murdered, sending her into a severe depression she is just now coming out of.

When an enthusiastic agent encourages her to write a new book, Merry sees it as a way to return to her successful, independent self, without the help of the unlikely trio of Concord women writers she’s thrown in with. But a dramatic turn of events rekindles Merry’s tragedy, fosters anger in her family, and threatens to plunge her back into the darkness. In some rather unconventional ways, the group that names themselves the Footnotes goes with her on a quest to find out what really happened the day her daughter was killed.

The answers may destroy Merry all over again—or finally show her who she really is.

The Ultimate Bible for Girls

Harper Collins Christian Publishing/Zondervan

I wrote the features for this Bible in 2007 as The Faithgirlz Bible, and it has recently enjoyed a comeback with a new title and WAY tween friendly packaging.

What a privilege to create guides throughout both Testaments so that girls 8 to 12 can navigate the sacred text by themselves, perhaps for the first time. Each feature was created to show the young reader how the written basis for the Christian religion relates to them where they are and to allow them to interact with the message in a way that speaks to their lives.

Along with those who guided me in putting this together, we hope the Ultimate Bible for Girls leads these tender ones toward a deep relationship with God.

Works-In-Progress (WIP)

Since we are all WIPs, you can relate to the importance of a developing project, yes?

Currently I’m creating a mini-series of novels called The Footnotes Collection. Four very different women writers living in contemporary Concord, Massachusetts, are brought together by their common editor to support each other as authors.

“Support” seems unlikely, given their disparate origins and personalities, but the sheer messiness of life finds them mucking through those messes as a unit – talking each other out of crazy trees, rescuing one another from disaster and even investigating crimes they find themselves enmeshed in.

Each woman gets her own book, told in the first person and involving the other three and, over the course of the collection, building a bond that is literary, personal and spiritual – almost in spite of themselves. Concord, home of four of the most influential early American writers – Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott – forms the backdrop as do the works of those authors in some rather bizarre ways.

Book Two, A Mob of Scribbling Women, is also complete and will soon join Book One on its visits to potential publishers.

Book Three, Once Upon a Ransom, is in its fetal stage, and this is where you can help — if such a thing sounds like your idea of fun.

Visit my Facebook Page where the community creates ideas for characters, provides odd bits and pieces of information (they’re better than Google) and discusses the deeper issues that go into a novel. Come and be part of the process. Your input will, of course, be acknowledged on that page in the book no one reads except those whose names are on there!
